It’s the start of a new year and your intentions are good! But if you’ve never laced up a pair of running shoes or picked up a dumbbell, then getting fit as a beginner can seem like a daunting prospect.

At The Fitness Room Honeybourne our aim is always to make you feel comfortable (being a small, exclusive gym it’s something we are very good at!) and our gym is a safe space where you can begin your fitness journey in a non-intimidating atmosphere.

So, if you’re a beginner on your fitness journey, here are our tips to help you feel comfortable and ready to get started.

  • Work out your why

If getting started is the hardest part, then staying motivated is a close second. Knowing why you want to get fit will help you stay focused and keep going when you’re struggling or having an off day. Don’t overthink this. Wanting to lose a few kilos or to build bigger muscles is enough to get you started.

  • Set goals

Having a reason to get fit is a good starting point, but the next step is to work out how you’ll get there, and this is where fitness goals come in. Whether it’s getting to the gym three times a week, or doing 20 push-ups a day, write down your goals and stick to them. And don’t be overly ambitious either or you could quickly lose motivation. If you’re a complete beginner then start with small, simple goals and gradually work your way up to tougher challenges.

  • Make small changes that you can implement straight away

Signing up for a gym membership is the easy part but going regularly can be tough. Before you do anything, just make a few subtle changes to your day-to-day routine that can help you to get fitter without noticing. Whether it’s walking to work rather than driving, parking in the farthest space in the car park, dancing to the radio in the kitchen, or taking the stairs instead of the lift, there are lots of little things you can do to make an immediate difference and up your daily step count.

  • Build consistency

If you’re not used to exercising regularly, it can seem like the hardest thing in the world to start with, and the easiest thing in the world to stop! This is where consistency comes in, which will stop you from losing motivation. Set yourself small daily goals, keep a workout diary, and plan in advance. This includes things like meal preparation and packing your gym bag the night before. If you don’t plan, you’re more likely to grab a takeaway for convenience, or ‘forget’ to pack your gym bag before work because you’re rushing. Be honest with yourself and take control of your fitness journey, as you’ll feel the benefit in the long run.

  • Do things you enjoy

Getting fit doesn’t have to be boring, and it certainly doesn’t have to be lonely. If the thought of running on a treadmill for hours sounds dull, then consider a group exercise class instead where you will meet new people, have support, and get fit at the same time. Or ask a friend to join you. You will spur each other on. Remember, there are lots of different ways to get fit, and you should choose activities to suit you.
