Most of us have been there. After gorging on chocolate over Christmas (yes, we’re as guilty as you when it comes to sweet treats) and indulging in one too many glasses of fizz, we decide to set a new year’s resolution to join the gym and get fitter.

And then as soon as January’s over, it all goes out the window.

If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. But, if you’re seriously looking to avoid the inevitable from happening again this year, then The Fitness Room, Honeybourne can help you!

Lacking in motivation? Here are 6 ways to help you keep your fitness motivation going beyond January:

1. Set goals

Goal setting is vital if you’re going to stay motivated. Make them challenging but realistic too, otherwise you could easily find yourself giving up.

It could be as simple as going for 3 or 4 walks around your neighbourhood per week, or something more challenging like training for an event such as a 5k, 10k, half-marathon or even a marathon.

Whatever your goals, make them specific and achievable to you.

2. Sign up for an event

Whether it’s a 5k charity run or a full marathon, hopefully events like this will be back in business later in the year. Having an event to prepare for will be a huge motivator when you’re tempted to quit.

Again, keep it realistic though. If you haven’t exercised for a while, then a marathon might not be the best idea! A 5k charity run on the other hand could be perfect. And you’ll be raising money for a good cause too.

3. Find a fitness partner

Having someone to workout with will help you to keep going, particularly if you’re not feeling motivated to exercise but you’ve committed to a regular time with them.

You’ll also be helping them to keep going, so you’ll both be pushing each other. Staying motivated is far easier with someone in your corner than it is by yourself.

4. Give yourself rewards

There’s no point having a goal to aim for if you don’t have a reward that follows it. A reward is a great motivator when you’re struggling, and it’ll feel more satisfying if you’ve earned it.

It doesn’t need to be extravagant, maybe something as simple as a new item of clothes, a night out or a small sweet treat!

5. Buy some new training gear

There’s no need to spend a fortune on top-of-the-range athletic gear, but a new top for example will not only help you to feel more comfortable, but it can also act as a financial incentive too. After all, you’re unlikely to fork out money on new clothes you don’t wear.

6. Track your progress

Keep a note of what you’ve been doing so you can see how far you’ve come. It’s easy to lose heart if you’re not progressing as quickly as you’d hoped but keeping a diary to see how far you’ve come each week is a great way to stay motivated.
