Exercising as a family can be great fun and it can help instil good habits in kids at a young age. Exercising outdoors and being among nature can be a great stress reliever too!

The team at The Fitness Room Honeybourne like to train outdoors whenever we can, so here are 10 outdoor activities that the whole family can enjoy in our beautiful location:

  • Cycling

Dust down your bikes and head to the countryside for a family day out. The little ones will love tearing round fields and open spaces, while for parents it’s a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle for a few hours while also staying fit.

  • After-dinner walks

Getting the kids away from the TV screen for this might not be easy, but if you do it at the right time of year then they’ll be desperate to get outside. Think Halloween or Christmas for example, so they can see the decorations around the neighbourhood. In spring and summer, the lighter evenings offer opportunities for late evening walks and fresh air before bedtime.

  • Water games

Little ones (and adults too) love splashing around and making a mess, and water games will keep them entertained for hours. If you have a garden then a slip and slide or a paddling pool are ideal, otherwise some water pistols and water balloons in the local park can be just as much fun.

  • Football

Get out in the garden or head to the local park and just have a good old kickabout. Football is popular because it’s so affordable. You just need a cheap ball and a bit of space and the kids will be running around pretending to be Lionel Messi in no time.

  • Tennis

You don’t need to spend hundreds of pounds joining a fancy tennis club. Just get a couple of cheap rackets and head to the park for a rally. There are public tennis courts in Evesham too if you fancy taking it a little more seriously.

  • Sightseeing

It may not be the most obvious family fitness activity, but sightseeing can be a great way of exercising and exploring without even realising it. Head into a nearby town or village and wander around some of the attractions. You’ll cover far more distance than you realise and if the kids are getting bored then liven it up by getting them to play a game like I-Spy or counting the number of attractions they see, for example.

  • Ice-Skating

Outdoor Ice rinks pop up everywhere over the festive season and beyond and they’re a great place to get you in the Christmas spirit. Not forgetting all those festive calories you’ll burn off while whizzing around too! Once Christmas is over, if you’ve got the ice-skating bug, head to your local indoor rink instead.

  • Outdoor Gym

Many parks and recreation areas around the UK have public gym equipment. Show the kids how to use it at a young age and it’ll help to instil exercise as a habit early on. The balance beam is probably the most child-friendly activity for the little ones.

  • Tag Rugby

As well as being a great workout, this is a fun way to improve hand/eye co-ordination. And the fact it’s not full contact means that the whole family can join in, regardless of age or size.

  • Footgolf

The beauty of footgolf is that you don’t need to be good at football to enjoy it. Everyone can give it a go, and for those family members who are into football, it’s an opportunity to sharpen their skills.
